Tim Conway’s Performance In “Mr. Tudball Goes To Hawaii” Is Pure Comedic Brilliance
‘The Carol Burnett Show’ featured many clever comedic sketches, including a memorable one with Mr. Tudball, portrayed by Tim Conway. In this scene, Mr. Tudball takes his wife and secretary on a trip to Hawaii. Vicki Lawrence delivers a fantastic performance as Mrs. Tudball, while Carol plays the quirky secretary, Mrs. Wiggins.
In this skit, Tim Conway showcases his talent for physical comedy, bouncing around on the hot sand. Mr. Tudball hears shouting, which he quickly identifies as coming from his wife. Vicki appears as Mrs. Tudball, dressed in an exaggerated costume.
Frustrated, Mr. Tudball tells her to be quiet, finding her bothersome, and complains that she didn’t pay for her own ticket. Then, Mrs. Wiggins steps out with her signature walk, exclaiming, “Oh, I just love the island! I could stay here forever.” The audience erupts in laughter, prompting Mr. Tudball to respond, “Sit down, hula nose.”
As Mrs. Wiggins takes a seat, the chair collapses, causing her to struggle to rise, much to the crowd’s amusement. Mr. Tudball insists they get to work, and when Mrs. Wiggins opens a suitcase revealing an electrical cord, she scans the area, confused, and says, “I don’t see an outlet anywhere.”
Mr. Tudball quips, “Why don’t you run down to the ocean and plug it into the electric eel?” Meanwhile, Mrs. Tudball expresses her boredom and her desire to see a volcano. Mr. Tudball warns her, saying, “I read in the pamphlet that the volcano is still active. Get too close, and the lava could come up at you.” However, he then realizes he might want her to visit after all and grabs the pamphlet, urging her to be first in line.
As she stands, the chair gets stuck, humorously caught on her backside. Mrs. Wiggins attempts to play the ukulele but her off-key singing annoys Mr. Tudball. When she starts to leave, he sweet-talks her into staying. She questions his sincerity, and he dramatically declares, “If I’m lying, may the wicky wicky lightning god strike me dead!” At that moment, a massive lightning strike culminates the skit with a spectacular explosion, leaving the audience in stitches.
