Woman Attacks Retired NYPD Detective Over His ‘Birthday Hat’

Retired NYPD Detective Daniel Sprague experienced an unexpected birthday altercation when a woman punched him over his red “Make Fifty Great Again” hat, a gift from his wife. The hat, paired with a shirt featuring the American flag and the words “Making America Great Since 1970,” sparked the incident during a celebration at The Stage on Broadway.

Sprague recalled the confrontation: “I was outside with friends when someone grabbed me from behind, spun me around, and punched me. I initially thought it was a friend until I was hit. It was shocking to see someone so upset.”

Both Sprague and the woman were removed from the venue, and he did not get a chance to contact the police immediately. However, he later filed a report with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, stating that the suspect grabbed his hat and struck him but that he did not retaliate.

Reflecting on the night, Sprague noted that while he received a mix of reactions to his hat—ranging from smiles to disapproving looks—the situation had not turned violent until the altercation. “All night, people would smile, give me thumbs up, or show disapproval, but it was never aggressive,” he said.

Sprague, who is a Trump supporter, emphasized the importance of respecting differing opinions. “I wouldn’t hit someone wearing a Bernie hat. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I didn’t support Obama, but I would still show him respect,” he added.

Following the incident, Sprague shared his experience on Facebook, including photos of his injuries, and mentioned awaiting contact from Nashville detectives. The post was later deleted.
