Ill Man Visits Church Closed For 70 Years, Finds A Way Inside, And Uncovers An Astonishing Secret
Update: This story, initially reported in November 2012, is being revisited.
In a remarkable turn of events, a Minnesota man diagnosed with terminal cancer discovered surprising news while working on restoring an old church.
At 57, Greg Thomas was informed that his stage IV cancer was so advanced that he had only a few months left to live. Medical professionals advised his family to start making funeral arrangements.
Despite the grim prognosis, Thomas took solace in visiting an abandoned church daily, accompanied by his dog. He spent these visits sitting on the church steps and praying.
The church, constructed over 150 years ago by Czech immigrants, had been deserted for over a century.
Thomas attempted several times to access the church but was unsuccessful. After some effort, he connected with the caretaker of the adjacent cemetery, who helped him gain entry.
Upon entering, Thomas found the church, though preserved in its 19th-century state, in dire need of restoration. Determined, he set out to rejuvenate it, beginning with painting the exterior.
Even though his health was declining and he was reliant on a feeding tube, Thomas committed to the renovation project.
Three years later, Thomas received astonishing news: his cancer was in remission.
Overwhelmed with gratitude for this second chance, Thomas intends to continue his work on the church.
“This is my way of expressing thanks,” Thomas shared with WAVY, visibly emotional.
