In a remarkable demonstration of dedication, an Illinois teacher affectionately known as “Ms. Helma” took extraordinary steps to ensure that one of her fourth-grade students with cerebral palsy could join a two-day hiking trip. Helma Wardenaar’s commitment was evident as she physically carried 10-year-old Maggie Vazquez, creating a truly inclusive and memorable experience.
As school administrators sought ways to include Maggie on the trip to Camp Sullivan, situated 40 miles from their Chicago charter school, the Academy of Global Citizenship, Wardenaar’s determination stood out. The focus was always on making sure Maggie could attend, rather than whether she would go.
Various solutions were considered, including a wheelchair, a barrel, and even the playful idea of renting a pony. However, due to logistical issues and regulations at the forest preserve, these options were dismissed. Undaunted, Wardenaar turned to social media for advice. Through a connection with an employee named Greg at Recreational Equipment Inc., she discovered the Freeloader, a carrier designed for taller children like Maggie.
After obtaining Maggie’s approval, Wardenaar purchased the $300 carrier, enabling the outdoor adventure to go ahead. From May 30 to June 1, around 50 fourth-graders and 10 staff members set out on the camping trip.
Wardenaar shared her experiences, highlighting the joy of connecting with nature. “We saw birds, frogs, and deer. We were able to do everything her peers were doing; she was one of us.” Carrying Maggie over rough terrain was challenging, but Wardenaar drew strength from Maggie’s resilience and the happiness she felt among her classmates.
Maggie’s mother, Michelle Vazquez, expressed her deep appreciation for Wardenaar’s steadfast support, noting her advocacy for Maggie since first grade. Vazquez commended Wardenaar for going “above and beyond” during the camping trip, providing opportunities that Maggie wouldn’t typically have due to her challenges. Being immersed in nature proved to be a wonderful experience for Maggie.
Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, the executive director at AGC, echoed these sentiments, describing Ms. Helma as the “epitome of relentless determination,” someone who consistently strives to ensure her students receive the support they need.
Wardenaar’s outstanding efforts illustrate the profound impact that dedicated educators can have on their students’ lives. This story emphasizes the significance of inclusivity and the lengths to which teachers like Ms. Helma will go to create meaningful and unforgettable experiences for their students.
