Shelby Carter is being recognized as a hero for her quick actions that saved her newborn daughter’s life.

During a fire that engulfed their home, Carter strapped her 10-day-old daughter, Keana, into a car seat and dropped her from a second-story window.

According to Captain Jake Plumer of the Wyoming-Speer Fire Department, responders found the baby safe on the ground.

Fire crews attempted to rescue the 21-year-old mother, who was trapped inside, but unfortunately, they were unable to reach her in time.

She was later pronounced dead after being discovered in an upstairs bedroom. An autopsy revealed that she succumbed to smoke inhalation.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the fire department expressed their condolences and encouraged donations for Carter’s family.

The post stated: “Words cannot convey the tragedy our community has faced today. We are experiencing emotions that no department wants to endure.”

Shawna Burwell, Carter’s cousin, shared, “Yesterday was her 21st birthday, and she had posted about her wonderful day on Facebook. This morning, she shared on Snapchat, ‘loving these mommy moments,’ with the baby on her chest.”

Carter’s obituary noted, “She cherished every child she encountered, and they loved her in return. Her proudest moment was becoming a mother.”

A GoFundMe campaign established to support Carter’s baby and family has raised over $30,000 as of Saturday evening.

“It’s been incredible to see the outpouring of support from our community, not only for the family but for everyone affected by this tragic event. We are proud and honored to be part of this community,” Plumer remarked.
