13 Truck Drivers Grab Attention By Creating A ‘Safety Net’ On The Highway

Note: This story is being republished, originally reported in April 2018.

Detroit police responded to a call about a man threatening to jump from an overpass on Interstate 696. Officers, along with negotiators, arrived at the scene and developed an unexpected safety plan.

Around 1 a.m., Michigan State Police started directing semi-trucks to park beneath the bridge to cushion the potential fall if the man decided to jump.

The truckers formed a line across the eastbound lanes while police closed the westbound lanes to allow more trucks to gather. A total of 13 truck drivers stayed parked under the overpass for several hours until the man was safely taken to a nearby hospital by police.

The act of heroism occurred while most of the nation was asleep, but it was documented on camera.

Images of the scene gained attention after Michigan State Police shared them on Twitter to thank local officials for their creative approach. The tweet highlighted the dedication of officers to public service.

Additionally, the tweet included a reminder about the struggles faced by the individual in the photos, urging anyone in need of help to reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
