A mother from Pennsylvania, who was pregnant, experienced unexpected pain while riding in a car with her fiancé. The incident, along with photos, has since gone viral. (Warning: The images below are graphic.)
Raelin, who was 29 weeks along with her second child, initially thought the discomfort was due to Braxton Hicks contractions, which are often described as “practice contractions.” These typically begin after the 20th week of pregnancy as the body prepares for labor, and they are usually not painful, though some women may feel significant discomfort.
However, as Raelin’s pain intensified and contractions became more frequent, she recognized the need to get to the hospital. She explained to Kidspot, “I live about 15 minutes from the hospital, but I had to drop my daughter off at her godmother’s, which added another five minutes.”
While they were en route to the hospital, the pain escalated, prompting Raelin to attempt to call 911. Since the dispatcher struggled to understand her, she handed the phone to Ean, her fiancé, who was focused on getting them to the hospital safely.
Ean took a risky shortcut, driving in the bus lane to bypass heavy traffic. “There were no buses coming, so he made the move to reach the hospital faster,” Raelin recalled.
Before they could reach the hospital, Raelin sensed the urgency of the situation. “I felt the baby descending and knew it was time,” she said. “I removed my pants, reached down, and felt his head. I pushed once, and he came out still inside the amniotic sac.”
The timeline was swift: they left their home at 11:14 a.m., dropped their daughter off at 11:22, and by 11:28, their son, Ean Jr. (nicknamed EJ), was born.
Fearing complications due to his early arrival, Raelin noted, “At first, he wasn’t moving. But when I rubbed his face, he instinctively brought his hands and feet to cover it, which reassured me he was okay.”
The couple reached the hospital just seven minutes later, but Raelin remained in the car while Ean sought assistance. “No one was coming until a security guard noticed us and called for help. That’s when Ean captured an incredible photo.”
She added, “Moments later, the car was surrounded by medical staff. The first doctor I recognized was someone I worked with; he took the baby and broke the sac right there, and EJ cried immediately. Then they took him to the NICU. I tried to follow but was told to stay put until a stretcher arrived.”
The medical team was astonished by the circumstances, particularly seeing EJ still in the sac.
Once the initial shock faded, Raelin reflected on the event. “It took about two hours for me to fully comprehend what had happened,” she shared. “I was sad knowing my baby wouldn’t be going home with me right away, but I also felt grateful. Had he not been born in the sac, he might not have survived.”
EJ is now healthy and thriving beyond doctors’ expectations, and he will remain in the hospital until he approaches his mid-October due date.
