Woman Cuts Down Dead Apple Tree, Discovers Something That Leads To Police Protection

Note: This story was originally reported in November 2015.

In an unexpected incident, a woman from Back Hill required police protection after an unexploded bomb was discovered in her garden, hidden within an old fruit tree.

Christine Battersby had called in a specialist to remove a decaying apple tree when, during the process, a startling find was made—a hand grenade. The tree cutter quickly notified the authorities, leading to a rapid police response.

Mrs. Battersby recalled how composed the specialist remained and how swiftly the police arrived. The old tree, likely part of a historical monastic orchard due to the area’s rich fruit tree heritage, had been dead for several years, prompting her to have it removed. The grenade’s placement in the tree raised questions about its past.

Glen Conway, the tree removal expert, was nearly finished when he discovered the unexploded device in a hollow at the tree’s base. The police quickly secured the area and advised the public to stay away.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit from Colchester was dispatched to address the situation. As a safety measure, sandbags were placed around the tree overnight, and the grenade was safely disposed of the next morning around 8 AM.

The discovery led authorities to provide police protection for the night to prevent any attempts by treasure hunters interested in the wartime artifact.

A police spokesperson expressed gratitude to Jewsons in Ely for providing materials to secure the area. The EOD Regiment, part of the British Army’s Royal Logistic Corps, played a key role in managing the unexploded ordnance.

Founded after World War II, the EOD Regiment focuses on counter-terrorism disposal and the safe management of munitions. With units across the UK, they ensure a swift response to assist law enforcement.

In addition to their domestic responsibilities, the EOD Regiment also provides bomb disposal teams in high-threat environments like Afghanistan and oversees the safety of military explosives.

This incident highlights the lasting effects of historical events and the vital role of specialized units in addressing unexpected dangers from the past, ensuring community safety.
