In a remarkable act of dedication, an Illinois teacher, known as “Ms. Helma,” went the extra mile to ensure that one of her 4th-grade students with cerebral palsy could join a two-day hiking excursion. Helma Wardenaar’s commitment was so profound that she carried 10-year-old Maggie Vazquez, making the experience both inclusive and unforgettable for the young student.
As school officials worked to find a way to include Maggie on the trip to Camp Sullivan, situated 40 miles from their Chicago charter school, the Academy of Global Citizenship, Wardenaar’s determination was unwavering. The focus was never on whether Maggie would participate but on finding the best way to make it possible.
Several ideas were considered, including a wheelchair, a barrel, and even the playful idea of renting a pony. However, these options were ultimately impractical due to logistical and regulatory issues. Undeterred, Wardenaar reached out on social media for advice and, through a contact at Recreational Equipment Inc., learned about the Freeloader, a carrier designed for larger children like Maggie.
With Maggie’s consent, Wardenaar purchased the $300 carrier, enabling the outdoor adventure to proceed. From May 30 to June 1, around 50 fourth graders and 10 school staff members took part in the camping trip.
Wardenaar reflected on the experience, highlighting the connection with nature. “We saw birds, frogs, and deer. Maggie was able to join in on everything her peers were doing; she was one of us.” Carrying Maggie across challenging terrain was no easy task, but Wardenaar drew inspiration from Maggie’s determination and the happiness she felt being with her classmates.
Maggie’s mother, Michelle Vazquez, expressed deep gratitude for Wardenaar’s steadfast support, noting her advocacy for Maggie since first grade. Vazquez commended Wardenaar for exceeding expectations during the camping trip, providing Maggie with experiences she might not have otherwise had. The time spent in nature proved to be a unique and wonderful experience for Maggie.
Sarah Elizabeth Ippel, the executive director at AGC, also praised Ms. Helma as the “epitome of relentless determination,” recognizing her consistent efforts to ensure her students receive the support they need.
Wardenaar’s extraordinary efforts highlight the profound impact that dedicated educators can have on their students. Her actions underscore the importance of inclusivity and the remarkable lengths to which teachers like Ms. Helma will go to create meaningful experiences for their students.
