Every Morning, As Usual, The Bus Driver Collects The Children Early. However, Parents Later Discover That The Kids Haven’t Arrived At School
Note: We are sharing this story again, originally reported in December 2018.
In a heartwarming Christmas story, Wayne Price, a bus driver from Alabama, is gaining recognition for a generous act that truly captures the essence of the holiday season.
A decade ago, Price wouldn’t have imagined himself as a bus driver. Having moved from a full-time ministry role in 2013, he was encouraged by a former principal friend to take on the position, which aligned with his desire to work with youth.
Price reflected on his new role, saying, “I was amazed at how quickly I developed a fondness for the kids.” He now drives students from elementary to high school in Montevallo. Although his time with them is limited, Price values the chance to make a positive impact.
When Shelby County Schools announced a two-hour delay due to bad weather, Price received a text on a Tuesday morning. Knowing breakfast would be unavailable at Montevallo Elementary School during the delay, he made a kind-hearted choice.
During a stop for his own breakfast, Price decided to buy 50 additional breakfast sandwiches for the students on his bus. He remarked, “I’m not wealthy. I’m in full-time ministry, and it might seem like a lot, but when you think about it, going out to dinner with my family can cost $50, so it was just like that.”
Fifth-grader Elizabeth Lopez from Montevallo Elementary expressed her appreciation, saying, “I’m really grateful to have him as a bus driver; he feels like a father figure to me.”
Principal Dr. Allison Campbell praised Price and highlighted the supportive nature of the community. She noted that Price exemplifies the values of the Montevallo community and schools.
Price shared his motivation, reflecting his belief in love and its connection to the spirit of Christmas. “Christmas is about giving and showing love. It’s about valuing others above yourself,” he said. His gesture, though material, represents the deeper meaning of Christmas.
As the students enjoyed their sandwiches, Price had a simple request: to keep the bus clean. The students honored his request, leaving the bus spotless.
Wayne Price’s thoughtful action serves as a reminder of the impact of kindness and the true spirit of Christmas, embodying the essence of giving and love.
