Father Fatally Assaults Man Who Followed His Daughter Into Restroom, Faces Legal Consequences
Note: This article revisits a case initially reported in November 2019.
Melvin Harris, 41, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
The Phoenix resident, who claimed he acted in self-defense to protect his daughter, was initially charged with second-degree murder in 2018.
The events took place on August 2, 2018, after Harris arrived at a QT store located at 19th and Dunlap avenues. His daughter reported that a man had attempted to enter her locked stall in the women’s restroom.
Security personnel escorted the man out, and Harris’ daughter identified him. Harris then told the security guard he intended to handle the matter personally.
Witnesses reported that Harris struck Leon Armstrong in the face, causing him to fall. Harris continued to assault him before leaving the scene.
Armstrong sustained a serious brain injury and passed away a few days later.
Harris’ sentencing is set for December 13.
