William Shatner Reveals He Has Limited Time Left
Note: This article revisits a story originally reported in March 2023.
William Shatner, the 91-year-old legendary actor known for “Star Trek,” recently discussed his thoughts on mortality in an interview about his upcoming documentary, “You Can Call Me Bill.” Shatner acknowledged that his time may be limited, but he chose to create this documentary as a way to leave a lasting message for his grandchildren. As a proud grandfather of five from his three previous marriages, he expressed a desire to create something meaningful for his family to remember him by.
The documentary, helmed by director Alexandre O. Philippe, is set to debut at the SXSW Film Festival in Texas. It features appearances by Shatner’s daughters, Leslie, Lisabeth, and Melanie. Reflecting on his role as a grandparent, Shatner shared with The Guardian in 2014 how much joy it has brought him, including the moments he cherishes with his grandchildren.
Recently, Shatner also made news by reuniting with his former wife, Elizabeth Martin, three years after their $2 million divorce. They were seen together at the Living Legends of Aviation Awards in Beverly Hills in January, where they spoke openly about their renewed connection. Shatner described Elizabeth as the “zest of life,” and she referred to their relationship as “cinnamon.” Their divorce was finalized in March 2020, with Shatner retaining his properties in Studio City and Three Rivers, California, while Elizabeth received their Malibu Cove and Versailles, Kentucky properties, as well as part of her family farm in Indiana.
Shatner’s personal history includes four marriages: his first to Gloria Rand from 1956 to 1969, with whom he had three children; his second to Marcy Lafferty from 1973 to 1996; his third to Nerine Kidd Shatner, who passed away in 1999; and his fourth to Elizabeth Martin, which ended in 2019.
Despite his age and health challenges, Shatner continues to be active both professionally and personally. His documentary, “You Can Call Me Bill,” exemplifies his effort to leave a legacy for his family. His openness about his mortality and his dedication to his family are inspiring reminders to value our time with loved ones.
