Man Overwhelmed With Emotion Upon Discovering Inscription On Remote Forest Grave

Note: We are revisiting a story originally covered in April 2021.

In an uplifting turn of events, Zach Medlin’s casual walk through Kiroli Park in West Monroe, Louisiana, led him to an unexpected find that had been hidden for years. Among the scattered leaves and pine needles, Medlin discovered a small square stone that drew his attention.

While Medlin’s one-eyed Staffordshire terrier, Serena, played near the lake, Medlin’s curiosity got the better of him, prompting him to investigate the stone.

“The inscription was obscured by pine straw,” Medlin told Fox News. “I had to clear away the debris to see what the marker said.”

The inscription read: Buddie, 1928 — 1941, born a dog and died a gentleman. Medlin found himself wondering why this beloved pet had been laid to rest in a public park spanning 160 acres.

From the touching inscription, Medlin inferred that Buddie was a cherished companion who offered comfort during the challenging times of the Great Depression.

“It’s truly heartening to think that Buddie brought solace to his owners during the Great Depression,” Medlin remarked. “Every dog deserves to be remembered with a marker.”

Local tales suggested that Kiroli Park had once served as a summer camp for Boy Scouts, where Buddie was said to be their mascot. According to the story, Buddie’s brave barking had alerted the Scouts to save a boy who was drowning.

However, further investigation calls this story into question. Lora Peppers, delving into old newspaper articles, found a handwritten note from October 18, 1993, on Findagrave.com. This note, written by Mrs. Dee Strickland, offered a different perspective: “According to Mrs. Dee Strickland, the dog belonged to Mr. and Mrs. Albert H. Jones, who lived at 215 Breard St., Monroe. Mrs. Strickland resided with the Jones family in 1932. The dog was a beautiful Irish setter.

“Mr. Jones, having often brought his dog to Kiroli Park for exercise, chose to lay him to rest there after his passing.”

Whether Buddie was a heroic mascot or simply a beloved family pet, one thing is clear – Buddie was a truly special dog. This touching memorial ensures that the memory of this remarkable animal lives on.

In a world full of inspiring stories, the discovery of Buddie’s resting place adds a warm chapter to the narrative of man’s best friend. As Medlin uncovered this hidden piece of history, it serves as a reminder that even in the most unassuming places, stories of loyalty, bravery, and love can be discovered, touching the hearts of those who find them.
