Jo Ann Ussery’s Innovative Housing Solution
In 1993, Jo Ann Ussery encountered a significant challenge when she lost her home in Mississippi due to a natural disaster. Faced with the need to find a new place for herself and her children, she was struggling financially and unable to afford a conventional trailer.

One day, her brother-in-law proposed a remarkable idea: instead of a traditional home, why not convert a decommissioned Boeing 727 into a living space? Inspired by this unconventional suggestion, Ussery bought the aircraft for just £1,500.

The entire purchase, including shipping, cost her around $2,000, but she invested approximately $30,000 to transform the plane into her ideal residence. The 138-foot-long jet was reimagined into a cozy home, featuring three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, a laundry area, and an opulent master bathroom located in the cockpit.

Ussery’s creative renovation turned the aircraft into a functional and unique dwelling. After several years of enjoying her extraordinary home, she decided to open it to the public as a museum, allowing others to appreciate the ingenuity of her project.

Despite the plane suffering some damage during a later move, Jo Ann Ussery’s innovative transformation of the Boeing 727 stands as a testament to her creativity and determination.
