In a tragic incident near the Wyoming-Colorado border, three young members of the University of Wyoming’s swimming and diving team lost their lives in a car accident. The victims were identified as sophomore Charlie Clark, 19, from Las Vegas; junior Luke Slabber, 21, from Cape Town, South Africa; and freshman Carson Muir, 18, from Birmingham, Alabama. The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 287 and Red Mountain Road, between Livermore and Virginia Dale, Colorado.

Initial reports suggest that the vehicle veered off the road and rolled multiple times after the driver swerved. The university confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with the Colorado State Patrol exploring all potential factors, including speed, impairment, and distractions.

Two other members of the men’s swimming and diving team sustained non-life-threatening injuries and have been discharged from the hospital. One of the survivors was driving the Toyota RAV4, which carried five occupants and left the southbound lane before the accident.

It’s important to note that the victims were not on official university business at the time of the incident. University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel expressed profound sadness, acknowledging the immense loss felt by the university and the wider community. Tom Burman, Director of Athletics, offered condolences and highlighted available counseling services for affected student-athletes and coaches.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon and his wife also mourned the tragedy, urging support for the families, friends, and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.

This heartbreaking event underscores the fragile nature of life and the unpredictability of accidents. The University of Wyoming and the community at large are coming together to support one another and honor the memory of those lost in this tragic event.
