Transforming A Garage Into A Cozy Home For Grandma

Repurposing an unused garage into an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) can present an innovative housing solution.

Martin Brown, a resident of Portland, Oregon, made the decision to transform his garage into a comfortable ADU for his mother-in-law. This conversion allowed her to reside in close proximity to her grandson, eliminating the necessity for a new residence.

Despite its compact size, the ADU was thoughtfully designed to encompass all necessary amenities. The interior boasts a cozy sofa bed, a fireplace, a well-appointed kitchen, a loft bedroom featuring a skylight, and a compact bathroom.

Emphasizing natural light, the design incorporates a glass door and skylights to impart a spacious ambiance. Preserving elements of the original 1920s garage, such as the concrete floor and vintage fittings, adds a rustic charm to the space.

This inventive ADU offers a welcoming and practical living area, providing an inspiring option for family accommodation.
