Thirteen Truck Drivers Draw Attention As They Block A Highway To Create A ‘Safety Net’
Note: This story, originally in the news in April 2018, is being republished.
Detroit police responded to a call about a man threatening to kill himself by jumping off an overpass on Interstate 696. Responding with negotiators, officers implemented an unexpected plan.
Just after 1 a.m., Michigan State Police began signaling semi trucks to stop. The trucks were arranged beneath the bridge to reduce the potential fall distance if the man chose to jump.
The truckers formed a line across the east-bound lanes, with police closing the west-bound lanes as more semi-trucks arrived. 13 big rig drivers remained parked under the overpass until the man was safely taken to a nearby hospital by the police.
The heroic act occurred while much of the country slept, but it was captured on camera.
The images went viral after Michigan State Police tweeted them, thanking local officials for the unconventional plan. The tweet from MSP Metro Detroit stated, “This photo illustrates the dedication of troopers and local officers to serve the public.”
The tweet also reminded, “Also in that photo is a man struggling with the decision to take his own life. Please remember help is available through the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.”
