A Delivery Driver For FedEx Was Attacked During A Delivery, But Defended Themselves, Resulting In The Demise Of The Assailant

Please note: The following incident, originally reported in December 2019, is being republished.

According to authorities, a FedEx delivery driver involved in a shooting possessed a legally registered firearm.

The altercation unfolded as the 32-year-old driver was delivering a package to a residence on the 600 block of Unruh Avenue. A perpetrator approached, robbing him of his wallet and keys before firing shots, stated Philadelphia Police Department Capt. Jason Smith. In response, the driver returned fire, injuring 27-year-old Jevan Lundy.

Lundy was later discovered by law enforcement on the 1400 block of Creston Street, unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at Einstein Medical Center shortly after. Officers recovered the victim’s FedEx identification card at the scene.

Another individual was found with Lundy, and their vehicle was searched. Police suspect the car was utilized to transport Lundy from the shooting site. While the individual was taken in for questioning, it remains uncertain whether charges will be filed. “He is cooperating with our investigation, denying any involvement in the robbery,” Smith stated.

Following the incident, the injured driver managed to drive away and was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of his truck in an Acme parking lot on the 6600 block of Oxford Avenue, suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

The driver informed authorities that he had exchanged gunfire with Lundy. Law enforcement retrieved his legally registered 9mm handgun and carry permit from the vehicle.

“Based on the preliminary information, it appears to be a case of self-defense: he was fired upon first and returned fire,” remarked Acting Police Commissioner Christine Coulter. Margie Helverson, a resident in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, described the driver as a “friendly individual.” “He would always ring the doorbell to notify us of a delivery, so I’m hoping he’s alright,” she expressed.

A spokesperson for FedEx declined to comment on the company’s policy concerning armed drivers, stating, “The safety of our team members and service providers is paramount, and we are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation.”
