A Mother Garnered Online Attention For The Shirt She Persuaded Her Son To Wear To School
A mother from Texas took action when she discovered troubling behavior in her son’s interactions at school. School administrators informed her that he was engaging in bullying behavior towards other students. Feeling concerned about her son’s behavior, the mother, identified only as Star, decided to address the issue directly.
Star felt her son was heading down the wrong path by using derogatory language like “idiots” and “stupid” towards his peers. In an attempt to confront and rectify his behavior, she made him wear a T-shirt declaring, “I am a BULLY,” at Greenleaf Elementary School. By doing so, she aimed to publicly acknowledge his actions within their community and online, where she shared an image of him in the shirt on Facebook.
While Star’s approach may have seemed extreme to some, she defended her actions, explaining that she wanted her son to understand the impact of his behavior and apologize personally to those affected. Despite criticism from some online, she stood by her decision, emphasizing that she aimed for her son to learn from the experience and empathize with others.
However, not everyone supported Star’s method of addressing her son’s behavior. A child psychiatrist cautioned against solidifying a negative identity in a young child and suggested seeking support from professionals instead. Despite differing opinions, Star maintained that her decision was endorsed by the school district, Splendora ISD, which affirmed parents’ rights to take certain actions on behalf of their children.
Ultimately, opinions on Star’s approach vary. While some commend her for taking proactive steps to address her son’s behavior, others advocate for alternative methods that prioritize support and guidance over public embarrassment.
