Each night, a woman paralyzed from the waist down witnessed her husband’s clandestine trips to the garage.

Brad Soden, a combat veteran, was deeply moved by his wife’s tears as he dedicated years to designing a wheelchair suitable for her. Liz Soden often felt frustrated about missing out on family hikes and camping excursions with their five children due to being largely disabled in a vehicle accident just three months before their wedding. Brad was determined to make a difference.

Speaking on Thursday’s TODAY with Matt Lauer, Brad expressed, “I’m motivated when I see her cry.” “I’ll make it happen,” he vowed.

Despite lacking a college degree or engineering background, Brad, a plumber, overcame numerous challenges to create a wheelchair with treads resembling those on a tank, capable of operating off-road and traversing mountainous terrain.

The resulting innovation was the “Tankchair,” providing Liz with the independence she longed for and becoming Brad’s full-time pursuit.

“I can now trek and camp,” Liz shared with Lauer. “Previously, I would be stuck in the car when we went to snowy places. Now, I can join my kids outside and actively engage with them. I’m no longer confined to the car or home—I’m out exploring.”

While Tankchairs aren’t covered by insurance as they are considered recreational vehicles, Brad plans to donate them for free to injured veterans. The chair, with a waiting list of three months for new orders and priced between $12,000 and $15,000, capable of reaching speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, has gained popularity among disabled veterans.
